<title>Quantitative analysis of aromatic molecules in water by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy and multivariate calibration techniques</title>

Abstract: We introduce a fiber optical sensor which is capable of analysing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and monoaromatics like benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTXE) in natural water samples. The compact system is based on laser-induced, time-resolved fluorescence emission spectroscopy. It uses a miniaturised all solid state laser which can be operated at 266 nm and 355 nm. The 3-D data set of a time-resolved fluorescence spectrum is reduced to a 2-D data set by a factor based technique, i.e. by d… Show more

“…Therefore, the problem is non-linear, so it is impossible to perform matrix transformations used by the authors 5,6 . Our choice of the pair of arguments (F i , T j ) instead of (λ n , T m ) as in 5 is connected with two reasons. First, change of F provides more effective manifestation of photo-physical parameters than change of λ; second, in many cases we have no information about fluorescence spectra of the fluorophores.…”

“…Time resolved measurements analyzed by multivariate calibration methods are a new analytical tool. For instance, Lewitzka et al (1999) introduced a fiber optical sensor for the analysis of aromatic compounds using PLS regression, and Selli et al (2004) published a new method for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water using parallel factor analysis and time resolved data. More recently, multivariate calibration was successfully used in the simultaneous determination of salicylic acid and salicylamide in blood and urine (Pulgarín, Molina, and Ferrer-Robles 2011).…”

“…Mit Hilfe des CCD-Laserspektrometers wurde von F. Lewitzka die Möglichkeit zum Nachweis von Xylol in Wasser untersucht [198]. Innerhalb der Gruppe der BTXE-Aromaten ist Xylol der Analyt mit der höchsten Fluoreszenzintensität (bei Anregung mit 266 nm) und der längsten Fluoreszenzabklingzeit.…”
