LTCC Based Highly Integrated SiPM Module With Integrated Liquid Cooling Channels for High Resolution Molecular Imaging

Abstract: We present a very compact hybrid detection module based on an advanced liquid-cooled LTCC substrate. The double sided hybrid combines 144 photo detectors and 4 specialized flip-chip readout ASICs used for the readout of scintillation crystals with application in time-of-flight (TOF) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) combined with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Positron Emission Tomography is mostly known for its use in oncology applications, cardiovascular disease, and imaging of brain functions. If MRI im… Show more

“…The crystal matrices are one-to-one coupled to Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) arrays (Hamamatsu S13361-2050 AE-08 SPL MPPC) with 2.2 mm pitch. Two crystal matrix and SiPM array assemblies are in turn mounted onto one detector module board hosting at the same time four PETA6SE Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) [21].…”

“…Each readout board carries four ASICs, two per SiPM array. We use the PETA6SE-ASIC designed by Prof. Fischer and his group from the University of Heidelberg as readout ASIC [7], [8]. It has 36 single-ended input channels, a size of 5 mm × 6 mm and is flip-chip bondable.…”

“…Furthermore, because of the variation of the SiPM gain and consequently of increasing dark noise with temperature, the SiPM and the analog/digital electronics inside the magnet must be cooled and kept under controlled temperature. Various methods have been used: air cooling, water cooling, cold liquid cooling [115]. Hence the technology complexity has been transferred for the original "block detector" of 1986 [4] to the distributed digital electronics and packaging A successful field of SiPM applications has recently been that of range monitoring in hadrontherapy (see section 5).…”
