Lubrication Condition Monitoring in EHD Line Contacts of Thrust Needle Roller Bearing Using the Electrical Impedance Method

Abstract: In this study, we developed the electrical impedance method which simultaneously measures the thickness and breakdown ratio of oil films in elastohydrodynamic (EHD) line contacts within thrust needle roller bearings. Initially, we theoretically demonstrated that the oil film thickness and breakdown ratio can be simultaneously measured using the complex impedance that is produced when an AC voltage is applied to EHD line contacts. To verify the measurement accuracy of the electrical method, we monitored the oil… Show more

“…The method has been successfully applied to measure the failure rate of high-speed bearings with elliptical and point contacts and quantitatively assess the breakdown rate (Maruyama et al, 2019). In addition, the resistance measurement method enables real-time monitoring of the lubrication status of needle roller bearings (Maruyama et al, 2023). Considering the relationship between resistance and lubrication characteristics, the output characteristics of friction-electric bearing sensors are established for resistance loading (Qin et al, 2023).…”

“…In 2023, Maruyama et al [44] monitored the temporal evolution of the electrical impedance of a thrust needle roller bearing. Initially, the film thicknesses obtained from the impedance method were observed to be lower than those predicted by Hamrock and Dowson.…”

“…In the current study, we focus on the direct comparison between the capacitancebased approach of Jablonka et al [29,30] and the impedance-based approach of Maruyama et al [42][43][44] for determining the film thickness in the identical EHL line contacts of cylindrical roller thrust bearings (CRTB). The results of both approaches are compared, and their accuracy and reliability are evaluated.…”

“…This method can be developed to monitor the amount of bearing lubricant remaining, which is of great help in avoiding bearing wear loss. Maruyama et al [214] proposed a resistive resistance method for monitoring the thickness and breakdown ratio of the oil film in an elastic hydrodynamic line contact within a bearing (Figure 23). They found at the beginning of the experiment that the bearing oil film thickness was less than the theoretical value and the breakdown ratio was greater than zero (indicating that the bearing was in mixed lubrication).…”
