The Provincial Appointments of the Emperor Macrinus

This article argues that the emperor Macrinus initiated an overhaul of the ranks of provincial governors after he came to the throne in 217. He removed several of Caracalla's legates in the Danubian region and in the provinces along the eastern frontier, replacing them with his own appointees. This interventionist approach to provincial administration was a significant departure from the usual practice of emperors retaining their predecessor's governors. It is argued that Macrinus' break with tradition was motivated by the fact that he was the first emperor to be elevated from the ordo equester, and wanted to consolidate his position by ensuring that the provinces were entrusted to trustworthy legates.

Les procurateurs équestres de la province d’Asie sous Caracalla : autour de la carrière de L(ucius) Lucilius Pansa Priscillianus

La mise en place des procurateurs d’Asie sous Caracalla, qui se réalise peu à peu, ouvre des perspectives sur le fonctionnement de l’État. Il faut placer à la jonction des règnes de Caracalla et de Macrin le procurateur Vipsanius Caecilianus Axius. De même, Claudius Dionysius se place à la jonction des années 211-212. Entre les deux se succèdent Lucius Didius Marinus et Lucius Lucilius Pansa Priscillianus. À propos de ce dernier, on peut déduire de l’éloge comme euboulos (IEph., 3053) qu’il assista Caracalla de son conseil lorsque celui-ci séjournait en Asie. On peut alors proposer de résoudre une difficulté de restitution dans une inscription d’Athènes relative à ce même personnage : on aurait mentionné son rang (ton kratiston) et sa qualité d’ami de l’empereur (philon).
