Lumbar intradural paragangliomas: report of two cases

Abstract: Paraganglioma (PG) is a rare tumor of the dispersed neuroendocrine system. PG derives from the embryonic sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Paraganglioma is a neoplasm of the dispersed neuroendocrine system that affects a variety of anatomic sites, mainly the head and neck. It occurs commonly in the carotid body, glomus jugulare, mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Primary spinal paragangliomas are quite rare tumors. They are commonly located in the cauda equina region, and manifest their own clinica… Show more

“…1 The primary treatment for CE-NETs is complete surgical removal of the tumor, as it is well-contained. 15,24 This was the case in all of our patients who underwent gross total resection. The prognosis is generally good for CE-NETs after total surgical resection, with a low local recurrence rate.…”

“…Spinal paraganglioma is a very rare tumor, accounting for around 0.07% of all paragangliomas and 3-4% of all spinal tumors. [ 1 ] The common locations of spinal paraganglioma are the cauda equina and filum terminale regions at the end of spinal column below the 1 st lumbar vertebra (L1 vertebra) level. [ 2 ] The clinical presentation of spinal paragangliomas depends on the level of the affected spinal cord and the degree of compression.…”

“…[ 3 ] Spinal paraganglioma is difficult to distinguish radiologically from other spinal lesions. [ 1 ] Other intradural lesions such as lipoma, schwannoma, meningioma, ependymoma, and dermoid tumor should be included in differential diagnosis, which shows the same MRI imaging feature as paraganglioma. [ 4 5 ] Ga-68 DOTA-NOC PET/CT shows tracer avidity in neural crest tumors, such as paraganglioma, due to the expression of somatostatin receptors.…”
