Luminescence dating of qanat technology: prospects for further development

Abstract: With few exceptions in which dating is implied by indirect association with adjacent settlements or incorporation of diagnostic artefacts in upcast sediment, individual qanats have proven very difficult to date. This absence of a chronological framework hampers both our understanding of technology transfer, as well as the study of local settlement and landscape evolution and the temporal correlation of land use with climatic and palaeoenvironmental data. However, surface shaft mounds potentially contain a sequ… Show more

“…For deposits in archaeological contexts, it has been applied in different spatio-temporal contexts, for dating canals (Berger et al, 2009;Huckleberry et al, 2012) and sedimentary accumulations upstream from dams (Aiuvalasit et al, 2010). More specifically in Iran, it has been used to date excavated material from the digging of qanats (Fattahi, 2015;Bailiff et al, 2018) and the fills of canals (Gillmore et al, 2011).…”

“…This dating technique has been applied with success in different spatio-temporal contexts, to canals (Berger et al 2009;Huckleberry et al 2012) and in sediment accumulations upstream from a dam (Aiuvalasit et al 2010). In Iran, it has been used to date the spoil heaps of qanats shafts (Fattahi 2015;Bailiff et al 2018) and the fills of canals (Gillmore et al 2011). However, to our knowledge this technique has not yet been tested on the core of the earth mass of a dam.…”
