Luminescence properties of ZnGa2O4 and ZnAl2O4 spinels doped with Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions

Abstract: Spinel‐type ZnGa2O4 and ZnAl2O4 powders doped with Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions, including dual doping, have been prepared by solid phase reactions and by deposition from chemical solutions. XRD analysis demonstrates the high quality of spinel grains constituting the powder. The luminescence shows that the rare earth ions are incorporated in the defect regions at the grain boundaries. “…ZnAl 2 O 4 has the symmetry of cubic, with a space group Fd3m and 8 formula units per unit cell [6]. Thirty two oxygen atoms occupy sites with C 3v symmetry forming a closely packed cubic lattice with 64 tetrahedral (T d ) and 32 octahedral (D 3d ) cation sites, only 8 tetrahedral and 16 octahedral of them are occupied by cations [7]. All Zn atoms occupy the tetrahedral sites (without inversion center), and Al atoms occupy the octahedral sites (with inversion center).…”
