Biodiversitas 15: 195-199.This study was conducted to determine status of the family Cichlidae in Oyan Dam, Nigeria, during the wet and dry seasons of 2011. Samples were collected using multi-mesh gillnets ranging between 30 mm to 80 mm. Simpson's Diversity Index was used to determine the species richness, while dominance and evenness were given by Shannon's index. A total of 547 individuals were caught from Imala (S1) and Ibaro (S2) sites of the dam. Species collected include Sarotherodon galilaeus (42.60%), Oreochromis niloticus (17.92%), Tilapia zillii (25.41%), Hemichromis fasciatus (10.61%) and Tilapia mariae (3.48%). Juveniles and sub-adults and adults were among the catch, the sizes were as big as 12.85±0.29cm SL, 109.22±6.00g BW in Tilapia zillii and small as 6.09±0.05cm SL and 8.07±0.15g BW in Hemichromis fasciatus. The diversity indexes showed that the diversity of Cichlids was lower in the two sites observed in Oyan Dam. The estimates of diversity indexes showed lower value for site 1 (0.284) than for site 2 (0.294); Simpson's diversity index was 0.716 for site 1 and 0.703 for site 2 while reciprocal indexes for site 1(3.521) was slightly lower than site 2 (3.367). Shannon-Wiener's Index recorded in the site 1 (1.36) was slightly lower than site 2 (1.37). Pielou's Index value recorded for site 1 was 0.845 and 0.852 for site 2. Sarotherodon galilaeus, Oreochromis niloticus, Tilapia zillii and Tilapia mariae exhibited a positive allometric growth pattern while only Hemichromis fasciatus showed a negative allometric growth.

SynopsisWe studied the reproductive behavior of wild caught and captive-born, first generation offspring of the Lake Malawi fish, Tramitichromis intermedius (Teleostei, Cichlidae), held in aquaria. Spawning behavior includes an exchange of actions with dominant males performing bower construction and courtship behaviors while females focus on oviposition and mouthbrooding. Egg counts per oviposition and brooding and interbrooding periods of wild caught T. intermedius follow records of other mouthbrooding cichlid fishes. Observation of circling behavior suggests this behavioral trait may be used in mate choice as longer circling, indicating a secure territory and thus male dominance, leads to more oviposition events and hence the potential for larger broods. Comparisons of clutch size and total length of young at release from full-sized females vs. first spawners reveal smaller clutches and young from the younger females, most likely stemming from differences in body size. Investigation of spawning photoperiodicity also noted distinctions between the two groups with wild caught T. intermedius spawning activity peaking in the middle of the light cycle and captive-born, first spawners exhibiting no significant peak in activity. The trend to spawn midday is most likely influenced by predation factors, while the lack of a spawning periodicity in the offspring may be explained by developmental processes, the absence of environmental cues or the tendency for smaller males to be opportunistic in spawning events. The details of spawning behavior recorded in this study provide a database to investigate species differences and to indicate changes due to chemical and physical disturbances.

SynopsisParental care of Tilapia mariae was observed in nature (Ethiop River, Nigeria) and in aquaria with or without intruders present. In the field, 2530% of nests are guarded by one parent, normally the female. It is assumed that most missing males have deserted. Males who participate in brood care exhibit both close brood guarding and brood defence at a lower level than females, and hence seem to invest less than females. Broods were guarded under three distinct types: (1) female at the brood, male in surroundings, (2) parents take turns, or (3) parents stay together at the brood. Each pair used predominantly one type until the young swam freely, thereafter type 3. Females defended most in type 3, but male attack rate did not differ among the types. Type 3 seems related to increased risk of brood predation and type 2 to the female's foraging needs, being more common when she is small and the mates do not differ much in size. The unequal guarding times of type 1 indicate rather a low parental investment by the male (and thus risk of desertion) than specialization in roles on equal investment basis. Parental behaviour exhibited in aquaria differed in many ways from that in nature. The role types were indistinct and there were more signs of motivational conflict between the mates. Isolated pairs avoided joint guarding in the embryo period and while switching, female turns were much longer than male turns, unlike in nature. When intruders were added, males attacked them more than did females.
