Lunar periodicity in the spawning of Tilapia mariae in the Ethiop River, Nigeria

Abstract: In aclear-water Nigerian stream, Tilupiumuriue showed lunar periodicity in breeding activity over a 9-week study period. Most clutches were laid during the last quarter of the moon cycle. It is suggested that spawning before full moon enhances the effectiveness of the parental care by allowing a maximal amount of moonlight during the most critical phases in the development of the young and by providing a cue for the pairs to spawn at the same time.

“…Tilapia mariae occurs in coastal areas and the lower courses of rivers. Fagade and Olaniyan (1974) reported the occurrence of the species in the Lagos Lagoon when the water is either fresh or recording low salinities (less than 1 o / oo ).This species possess abroad salinity tolerance (Schwanck 1987). In the present study, the smallest length of captured fish among the five species was 6.09±0.05cm in Standard length with a minimum weight of 8.07±0.15g for H. fasciatus.…”

“…Thus, especially in clear waters, reproductive activity of freshwater fish may be influenced by the moon phases. Lunar periodicity in the spawning activity of Tilapia mariae has been documented to coincide with the full moon, synchronizing breeding and increasing guarding efficiency of the parents (Schwanck 1987). Still, in T. intermedius, statistical analyses reject conformance of the brood and interbrood intervals to follow lunar cycles.…”

“…Diel activity in fish can be synchronized by many cues including photoperiodicity, developmental changes, temperature fluctuations, light intensity variations and lunar cycles (Schwassmann 1971, Billard & Breton 1978, Gibson 1978, Gibson et al 1978, Muller 1978, Schwanck 1987, Marshall & Bielic 1996. Still, some argue for the endogenous nature of rhythms, suggesting daily rhythms of activity in fish are innate or inherited (Schwassmann 1971).…”

“…The main river bed was 3 to 7 m deep, with a temperature of 26 to 27.5" C and an average flow of 0.5 m set-'. The study area has been described in more detail elsewhere (Schwanck 1987). The spawnings of Tilapiu mariae were concentrated in the lunar quarter preceding full moon.…”

“…Attack rate may be a misleading measure of defence effort interspecifically since the mere presence of parents may deter predators better in large than small fish. Furthermore, given the concentration of spawnings close to the full moon (Schwanck 1987) 7: mariae might expend an important part of defence effort at nights.…”
