Lung adenocarcinoma presenting with an orbital metastasis

Abstract: Orbital metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma is very rare. The incidence is only found to be approximately 7%–12% of lung cancer cases. The lack of knowledge about orbital metastasis results in misdiagnosis between malignant or benign lesion. This was a case of a 39-year-old woman complaining about a protruding left eye and a blind pain in the left eye characterized by hyperemesis eyeball. A CT scan of the orbital showed a soft tissue tumor in the fronto-naso-superomedial area of the left orbital with suspicion o… Show more

“…The statistics in this study also indicate that the most types of lung cancer cells were adenocarcinoma (76%). Several studies in Indonesia and in Medan city similarly reported that the most common lung cancer is found in subtype of adenocarcinoma with advanced stag so that distant metastasis to several organs were found [9]. The study from Elisna et al found that from the 1,874 subjects studied, 1,753 (94%) subjects were found with cytopathological type of adenocarcinoma [10].…”

“…This study was focused on lung adenocarcinoma which had been increasing in numbers in recent years and research in Indonesia had focused on the advanced stage [15], [16], [17], or those had spread to other organs (metastatic) [18]. Study showed that smoking is independent risk factor for lung cancer, particularly in males, in which clove cigarettes are preferred choice [19].…”

“…Diagnosis can be very challenging in terms of clinical symptoms associated with distant metastases as the initial clinical manifestations found [19]. Soeroso et al also stated that the most rarely found metastasis is orbital metastasis, especially in adenocarcinoma subtype [20].…”
