Lung carcinosarcoma as a rare biphasic sarcomatoid carcinoma: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionA fit, 57-year-old man admitted with chest pain and haemoptysis turned out to have a primary tumour in the left lung.Case presentationIn this 57-year-old Caucasian man, the diagnosis followed a computed tomography scan and histopathological evidence gained post-resection. The biopsy showed a uniform, spindle shape with focal pleomorphism which was suggestive of lung carcinosarcoma.ConclusionsThe authors report this case in literature and discuss how a rare malignant tumour can be found in those pre… Show more

“…According to the 2004 WHO classification of lung tumors, carcinosarcomas are defined as tumors consisting of an admixture of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements. It is included in a group of poorly differentiated non-small cell lung carcinomas that contain a component of sarcomatoid differentiation, so called sarcomatoid carcinoma [2,3,5,6].…”

It usually affects men, generally heavy smokers, between the fifth and eighth decades of life (2,3).…”

“…This makes it hard to distinguish them from each other. In endobronchial tumors, coughing and blood-tinged sputum usually occur, but peripheral tumors are asymptomatic [14]. However, no paraneoplastic syndrome was reported to accompany PSC, although such symptoms occurred in about 15–20% of small cell lung carcinomas (SCLCs) and 5–8% of NSCLCs [15].…”

“…[1] Although the development of carcinosarcoma is more closely associated with smoking, there are cases reported to be caused by asbestos exposure. [2,3] We present a carcinosarcoma case in an active smoker with interesting macroscopic views. The longitudinal section of the postpneumonectomy pathology specimen extends to the left main bronchus and all lower subsegment bronchi in the shape of a glove finger, filling the airways without invading the wall.…”
