Lung function in white children aged 4 to 19 years: I--Spirometry.

Abstract: Objective-A study was performed to produce reference standards for spirometric lung function in white children and to calculate standard deviation scores adjusted for gender and pubertal stage.Methods-A cross sectional study was made of 772 white children aged 4-6 to 18-8 years (455 male) tested on an OHIO 840 spirometer and assessed anthropometrically and pubertally.

“…Eighteen variables were analysed. FEV1, forced vital capacity (FVC), and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were measured by a Vitalograph Compact spirometer (Vitalograph, Buckinghamshire, UK) using Brompton Predicted scores to correct for height [5]. Minimum oxygen saturation during a 12-min walk (Sa,O 2 min) [6] was measured by continuous pulse oximetry.…”

“…Pretransplant FEV1 (FEV1t) was measured by spirometry, and corrected for height, age and sex using Brompton predicted scores [10]. Pretransplant minimum oxygen saturation obtained during a 12-min walk (Sa,O 2 mint) [11] was measured by continuous pulse oximetry.…”

“…23 Boys at this age tend to have higher IgE concentrations than girls, 19 in addition to lower respiratory fl ow rates. 10,17 Asthma management conditions in Brazil are below what is ideal. Considering the fact that asthma is a disease sensitive to primary health care management, hospitalizations are viewed as inevitable.…”
