Lupus Abdominal Crisis Owing to Rupture of an Ileocolic Aneurysm with Successful Angiographic Treatment

Abstract: There are many causes of acute abdominal pain, or abdominal "crises," in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), most frequently the causes are serositis or vasculitis. Vasculitis generally causes small vessel abnormalities and may present with symptoms owing to mucosal damage, such as pain, diarrhea, or bleeding. We present a patient with SLE who had the acute onset of severe abdominal pain while hospitalized for a lupus flare and who was found to have a ruptured ileocolic aneurysm with intraperiton… Show more

“…Certain limitations of open surgery make minimally invasive endovascular procedures an option for patients who are at greater risk from surgery. 8 , 9 , 16 For hemodynamically stable patients, ET remains the first-choice option for known arterial bleeding and is considered safe and effective for treating VAPAs. One advantage of this type of approach is that it enables treatment to be tailored to different conditions, making the method more precise for reducing postoperative morbidity.…”

“…Diante de algumas limitações na cirurgia aberta, o procedimento endovascular, por ser minimamente invasivo, tornou-se uma alternativa para pacientes que apresentavam maiores riscos cirúrgicos 8 , 9 , 16 . No caso de pacientes hemodinamicamente estáveis, o TE permanece a primeira opção para sangramento arterial conhecido e é considerado seguro e efetivo para tratar PAAVs.…”

“…Superior mesenteric artery branch aneurysms are very rare and potentially lethal vascular disease with an estimated incidence of one in 12,000 autopsies. 1 Ileocolic aneurysms are very uncommon and generally asymptomatic. Superior mesenteric branch aneurysms usually become symptomatic at the time of rupture.…”
