LXXX.—A redescription of the species Oxysomatium macintoshii (Stewart, 1914) (Nematoda)

“…From Oxysomatium macintoshii (Stewart, 1914) Karve, 1927, which is also reported from India and has the continuation of precloacal caudal papillae with the body papillae as recorded by Hsu and Hoeppli (1933), the present species differs in the number and arrangement of post-cloacal caudal papillae, relative size of spicules, gubernaculum, tail and body, and the state of development of eggs in the uterus.…”

“…Baylis (1929) while confirming his previous observations (1927), regarded Apledana as the valid genus with A. acuminata as its type, and thus cleared the doubts expressed by Travassos (1927). Karve (1927) redescribed Oxysoma macintoshii Stewart, 1914 which was till then doubtfully referred to the genus Oxysomatium. His description of the species cleared several points to consider Oxysomatium as the only valid genus, as pointed out by Harwood (1930).…”

“…He further pointed out several characters of 0. macintoshii such as the position of the vulva, size of the gubernaculum and the state of development of the eggs, which were the characters of Apledana as given by Baylis and Daubney (1926). Since Karve (1927), Baylis (1927) and Harwood (1930) include Stewart's species in Oxysomatium, Harwood rightly claims Oxysomatium as the only valid genus and A. acuminata (Schrank, 1788) as one of its member species. This is further supported by the characters of several species from both the genera including 0. srinagarensis in which we find a combination of the diagnostic characters of Oxysomaiium and Aplectana as given by Baylis and Daubney (1926).…”

These are 0. brevicaitdatum (Schneider, 1866) from Europe, 0. americanwn (Walton, 1929) Walton, 1933and 0. georgianum Reiber, Byrd et Parker 1940in U.S.A., 0. macintoshii (Stewart, 1914 Karve, 1927 from India and China and 0. rarae Walton, 1931 from Philippines. All these can be differentiated, in addition to the size of the body which is always 3 or 4 times more than in the present specimens, by the shape of the tail and absence of cuticular papillae on the body.…”
