Lycopene improves on basic hematological and immunological parameters in diabetes mellitus

Abstract: ObjectiveDiabetes is associated with an upset of hematological and immunological parameters in humans, however information on the effects of Lycopene is scarce. The aim of the study was to gain information on basic changes in hematological parameters as markers for safety since anemia as a complication in diabetic chemotherapy has been reported.ResultsLycopene had anti-anemic effects and improved on the immune status of diabetic rats and these observations were dose independent. There was a decrease in neutrop… Show more

“…This was an experimental study in which 25 adult male Wistar rats kept at Kampala International University Western Campus were assigned random numbers for experimental grouping as described previously [35]. Animals were exposed to good husbandry practices through access to sufficient quality food and water adlibitum, exposure to daylight 12 h and sufficient spacing to minimise stress as previously described [35]. Gastric ulcers were induced in only four experimental groups using indomethacin [36].…”

“…The effects may be attributed to the renoprotective effect of lycopene thereby improving erythropoietin levels which accelerates erythropoiesis. [36] The process of CRP seems to be an acute reactant that enhanced inflammation and infection and it has often been used as a diagnostic tool for such situations in CRF. Treatment with adenine substantially increased serum CRP, which was previously reported.…”

“…Moreover, lycopene 10 mm has immunopharmacology effects in inhibiting dendritic cells maturation induced by LPS in murine bone marrow through inhibiting MAPK and NF-κB p65 translocation pathways ( Kim et al, 2004 ). Indeed, treatment with lycopene 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, and 40 mg/kg for 28 days improves the immune status of diabetic rats by decreasing neutrophil count, low neutrophil-lymphocyte ratios, and platelet counts, and by stabilizing albumin-globulin levels ( Eze et al, 2019 ).…”
