Lycophytes and ferns composition of Atlantic Forest conservation units in western Paraná with comparisons to other areas in southern Brazil

Abstract: This study surveyed lycophyte and fern species in four forest fragments in western Paraná, Brazil, and compared them to 15 other fragments with different plant formations from the Atlantic Forest biome in southern Brazil. In total, five lycophyte species (in two families and two genera) and 98 species and two varieties of ferns (in 16 families and 38 genera) were registered in the four fragments. The most represented families were Pteridaceae (23 spp.), Polypodiaceae (18 spp.), Aspleniaceae (13 spp.), and Thel… Show more

“…With 204 species, RPPN Guaricica has more ferns and lycophytes than any other area in that state. Its richness is followed by the Guartelá State Park (163 spp., Michelon and Labiak 2013), Vila Velha State Park (152 spp., Schwartsburd and Labiak 2007), Pico Paraná State Park (142 spp., Pereira and Labiak 2018), Ilha do Mel (114 spp., Salino et al 2005), and Iguaçu National Park (101 spp., Lautert et al 2015). Some mountainous areas at Serra do Mar, however, will probably show a higher number of species when studied more thoroughly.…”

“…Considering that species composition varies widely because of environmental diversity, Lautert et al (2015) suggests that biodiversity conservation should take into account the various Atlantic Forest vegetation types rather than dealing with this domain as a homogeneous unit. Therefore, we can conclude that D. sellowiana promotes spatial turnover within specific habitats at a fine scale and thus should be a focus of conservation action plans.…”

“…Its high biodiversity is partly related to the high environmental diversity (Silva and Casteleti, 2005), which in turn contribute to a wide variation in species composition, resulting in different vegetation types (Lautert et al, 2015). One of these vegetation types is the Restinga, which consists of pioneer and heterogeneous sandy coastal plain vegetation under marine influence (Scarano, 2002).…”
