Lycorine Hydrochloride Inhibits the Virulence Traits ofCandida albicans

Abstract: The human opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans causes a severe health burden while the biofilms formed by C. albicans present a kind of infections that are hard to cure, highlighting the pressing need for new antifungal drugs against C. albicans. This study was to explore the antifungal activities of lycorine hydrochloride (LH) against C. albicans. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LH against C. albicans SC5314 was 64 μM. Below its MIC, LH demonstrated antivirulence property by suppressin… Show more

“…This is often seen in many antifungal agents. 8,26,32,35 However, the ratio of IC 50 (in biofilm formation assay) to MIC (in planktonic growth) for FN was lower than those reported for other drugs, which were over 1000 for azoles. 8 dismutase 5 (SOD5) is useful to counter the oxidative stress (produced by immune cells or drugs).…”

“…The FN concentration required for about half maximal inhibition (IC 50 ) of biofilm formation was higher than its MIC, and IC 50 for biofilm development was even higher. This is often seen in many antifungal agents 8,26,32,35 . However, the ratio of IC 50 (in biofilm formation assay) to MIC (in planktonic growth) for FN was lower than those reported for other drugs, which were over 1000 for azoles 8 .…”

“…Lycorine hydrochloride, an alkaloid isolated from the herb Lycoris radiata has proven anti-cancer properties. Notably, it also demonstrates anti-biofilm, anti-filamentation, and anti-adhesive properties against C. albicans interestingly by inhibiting the hyphal formation in varying media conditions such as spider medium, GlcNAC medium, and in RPMI 1640 72 . Piperine, , was shown to inhibit C. albicans biofilm formation, hyphal morphogenesis and disturbs mature biofilms with no effect on C. albicans growth and metabolism.…”
