Lymph node metastases: importance of detection and treatment strategies

Abstract: Lymphatic vessels are the preferential route of most solid tumors to spread their metastases in the body. The onset of metastatic nests in draining lymph nodes (LNs) are a significant indicator of cancer progression and a dismaying sign of worsen staging. Therefore, the individuation and elimination of cancer cells within the lymphatic system (LS) are an important goal. Nevertheless, the targeting of the LS with traditional contrast agents and/or chemotherapeutics is difficult, due to its anatomical structure.… Show more

“…In this study, inter-reader variance of the elastography was avoided by performing assessment by at least three doctors. Twenty-three patients with superficial tuberculous lymphadenitis were type II, which was consistent with previous studies [ 25 , 26 ]. When the lymph nodes were primarily blue on the elastography, the pathological specimens were mostly hard with granulomas and large amounts of caseous necrotic tissue.…”

“…In addition, homeostasis of the interstitial fluid is maintained by the microcirculation system, based on permeation from the blood vessels and subsequent absorption by the lymphatic vessels [27] . More relevant to cancer, the lymphatic draining system not only plays a critical role in metastasis [28] , but it also provides a preferential recycling route to most administered anti-tumor drugs in vivo [29] .…”

“…Nanomedicine is based on the peculiar properties of nanoscale carriers that are designed to target and deliver drugs and/or diagnostic agents to specific organs and tissues [20][21][22][23][24]. Therefore, nanotechnology has important applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy [25][26][27][28]. Different kinds of nanocarriers can be used.…”
