Lymphangioma of the duodenum: Report of a case

Abstract: A case of lymphangioma of the duodenum with a successful preoperative diagnosis is reported herein. A 76-year-old man who complained of tarry stool was found to have a hemorrhagic polypoid tumor in the third portion of the duodenum. The tumor was diagnosed histologically as cavernous lymphangioma by endoscopic biopsy. Since such a tumor is essentially benign, a partial resection of the duodenum including the tumor was performed. Therefore, an endoscopic biopsy seems to be valuable in the diagnosis of duodenal … Show more

“…Most lymphangiomas arise in the neck and axilla; the gastrointestinal tract is relatively infrequently affected [1, 2, 3]. Although the macroscopic features of duodenal lymphangioma are known as submucosal tumors with white-colored spots [4, 5, 6, 7, 8], magnifying endoscopic images have never been reported. In this paper, we describe a case of duodenal lymphangioma observed by a magnifying endoscope with a narrow-band imaging system.…”

“…Intestinal lymphangiomas/hemolymphangiomas are relatively rare benign neoplasms and mostly subclinical. Bleeding is an important manifestation in usually ≥20 mm tumors 1,2 . Our case suggests that lymphangiomas, even if small, can cause life‐threatening gastrointestinal hemorrhage.…”
