Abstract: Preoperative lymphoscintigraphy and intraoperative lymphatic mapping were highly successful at identifying sentinel nodes in patients undergoing radical hysterectomy.

“…Likewise, the reproductive results are satisfactory despite the significantly increased number of premature deliveries (1,4,(7)(8)(9)(10)(11) . The sentinel lymph node mapping technique improved our knowledge about the lymphatic drainage of cervical carcinoma (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17) . Our experience with sentinel lymph node mapping enabled us to employ this method in the management of conservative surgeries in cases of early cervix carcinoma and to reduce the radicality of the medial part of the lateral parametria (15,16) .…”

“…The studies of sentinel nodes detection with radiocolloid technetium and blue dye further contributed to a better understanding of pelvic lymphatic drain (16,23) . SLNI is a highly sensitive method that enables intraoperative detection of metastatic foci in regional nodes and subsequent treatment of the most risky nodes (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)23) . Laparoscopic identification of sentinel nodes includes identification of bluestained lymphatic channels in the medial part of the lateral parametrium, potential identification of bluestained nodes in this region and their dissection and extirpation.…”

“…However, low detection rates for sentinel lymph nodes (60-85%) were noted by O'Boyle et al (6) and Dargent et al (7) . Higher sentinel node detection rates using Tc-99m radiocolloid mapping were reported by Lantzsch et al (8) and Levenback et al (9) (93% and 100%, respectively) ( Table 4). It appeared that the sensitivity of radioactive isotope scanning was higher than that when using blue dye.…”

“…Sentinel node identification first reported in cervical cancer in 2000 (39) is still at an early stage but shows great promise with very low or no false negatives in most series (40)(41)(42)(43)(44)(45)(46) . Detection of human papillomavirus DNA and cytokeratin mRNA in tumor-free lymph nodes as a means of identifying micrometastases has been described (47)(48)(49) , but the clinical implications are yet to be established.…”
