Lymphocyte depletion during treatment with intensive chemotherapy for cancer

Abstract: Recently we have observed an increased incidence of opportunistic infections in patients treated with intensive chemotherapy for cancer. Because T-cell depletion is associated with similar clinical events in human immunodeficiency virus infection and after bone marrow transplantation, we have analyzed peripheral blood lymphocyte populations in a series of patients during treatment with intensive chemotherapy for cancer. Although neutrophil, monocyte, and platelet numbers consistently recovered to greater than … Show more

“…Immunosuppression in children with cancer can be due to the illness itself, to the anti‐neoplastic therapy administered or to both 1–4. The effect of therapy is evident on all the hematological cellular lines but some differences are reported, especially regarding recovery time.…”

“…Chemotherapy for solid tumors can induce changes in lymphocyte subpopulations. These aspects have been evaluated previously in order to study lymphopoiesis during chemotherapy‐induced myelosuppression (8, 9). Colony‐stimulating factors (CSFs) can reduce the duration of neutropenia but has little practical benefit (10).…”

“…Intensive chemotherapy induces a dramatic depletion of lymphocytes. Several researchers have reported that the extent of lymphocyte depletion during chemotherapy depends on the specific protocol used 16,17 . Indeed, it is well known that cyclophosphamide has a greater effect on lymphocyte populations than other drugs 18 .…”
