Lymphoepithelioma-like breast carcinoma

Abstract: Nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma is an undifferentiated carcinoma in a dominated lymphoplasma-histiocyte stroma. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the breast is the mammary counterpart of the lymphoepithelioma of the nasopharynx and is characterised by proliferation of poorly differentiated malignant cells within a prominent lymphoid infiltrate. It is a very rare primary carcinoma of the breast first reported in 1994 by Kumar and Kumar. Fewer than 40 cases have been reported in the English literature. In thi… Show more

“…It is specific to Asian populations and Epstein-BarrVirus (EBV) infection is generally acknowledged as the most important etiology [1, 2], even though not all LELC samples were positive in EBV detection [3]. Multiple tissues and organs, for example nasopharynx, stomach, skin, liver, could be involved by LELC [46]. Primary pulmonary LELC was first described in 1987 by Begin [7], and so far, there have been only 200 cases reported, accounting for less than 1% of all lung cancers [8].…”

“…Epstein-Barr virus is usually integrated in these nasopharyngeal tumors and this can be detected by in-situ hybridization. LELC could occur in other organs like lung (2), salivary gland (3), uterine cervix (4), stomach (5), breast (6), and skin (7), but its association with EBV infection is inconsistent. LELC in the thyroid has been only reported in very few case reports and is not included in WHO classi cation.…”

“…The lymphoid component in most cases of LELC has T lymphocytes (CD3+, CD8+) mixed with some B lymphocytes. In addition, medullary carcinoma has a syncytial growth pattern of more than 75%, complete circumscription, diffuse mononuclear stromal infiltrate, moderate to marked nuclear pleomorphism, and absence of microglandular features [ 11 , 12 ].…”
