Lymphoepithelioma-like esophageal carcinoma: Report of a case

Abstract: We herein report the rare case of a patient suffering from lymphoepithelioma-like poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. The patient was a 74-year-old woman in whom an esophageal tumor was found during an operation for thyroid cancer. After performing a subtotal thyroidectomy and cervical esophagectomy, esophageal reconstruction was performed using a free jejunal graft. Based on the results of the pathological examination, the esophageal tumor was diagnosed to be primary lymphoepitheli… Show more

“…LELCS histologically resembles the lymphoepitheliomatous malignancies that have been described to occur in the nasopharynx, 4 palatine tonsils, 5 salivary glands, 6 lung, 7–9 thymus, 10 gastrointestinal tract, 11,12 kidney, 13,14 ureter, 15,16 urinary bladder, 17 breast, 18 and uterine cervix 19 . Microscopic examination reveals a multifocal distribution of tumor involving the mid to reticular dermis and occasionally the subcutis and skeletal muscle 1,20 .…”

“…Lymphoid stroma-rich carcinomas arising in other organs are called LELCs and have been reported in a variety of anatomic sites including the skin [17-20], lacrimal and salivary glands [21,22], thyroid gland [23], thymus [24], breast [25], lung [26], esophagus [27], stomach [28], colon [29], renal pelvis [30-33], ureter [32], kidney [31], bladder [34], prostate [31], uterine cervix [35], vulva [36,37], and vagina [38]. LELC in the liver has also been reported, but most of these cases have instead been referred to as LEL-CCCs [1-8].…”

“…The sizes were more than 1.3 cm in a diameter. Only one case 19 looked like a benign submucosal tumor with an unclear boundary and without a depression or ulcer, like our case. We should be aware that esophageal LELC usually appear as a submucosal tumor and may be confused with a benign tumor.…”

“…Lymphoepithelioma‐like carcinoma has been described in various organs including the salivary gland, thymus, thyroid, breast, lung, stomach, urinary bladder, uterine cervix and skin 3–11 . According to Medline's database ‘PubMed’, 16 LELC cases arising in the esophagus have been documented in the English literature 13–23 . This includes the cases described as poorly differentiated carcinoma with prominent lymphocytic infiltration.…”
