Lymphovascular invasion is an independent predictor of survival in breast cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy

Abstract: Background Various prognostic indicators have been investigated in neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) treated invasive breast cancer (BC). Our study examines if lymphovascular invasion (LVI) is an independent predictor of survival in women receiving NAC. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis in 166 women with operable invasive BC who underwent adriamycin (A) and taxane (T)-based NAC between 2000-2013. Presence of LVI was noted in breast excisions following NAC. Associations between progression-free and o… Show more

“…In the univariate analysis of association with recurrence (locoregional/distant) LVI (p value <0.001) showed statistically significant differences. Similar results were found with statistically significant differences in the study by Liu et al, 15 where in the univariate analysis, presence of LVI was significantly associated with worse progression free survival (p value <0.01).…”

“…They suggested that the degree of LVI is an important factor for prediction of NAC efficacy in breast cancer. Liu et al [ 28 ] reported that patients with no LVI with tumors positive for hormone receptor or HER2 overexpression had the most favorable RFS and OS when stratified by molecular subtype. Additionally, the authors showed that the patients with LVI and triple negative subtype had the worst RFS and OS.…”

“…Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) has been a topic of interest since it is currently considered as an important prognostic factor for primary breast cancer [ 1 , 2 ]. Schoppmann et al [ 3 ] previously reported that LVI is an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients with breast cancer.…”
