M-Mode Ultrasound Reveals Earlier Gluteus Minimus Activity in Individuals With Chronic Hip Pain During a Step-down Task

Abstract: Increased gluteus minimus motion during the swing phase and earlier gluteus minimus and superficial gluteus medius motion in individuals with hip pain suggest an overall increase of muscle activity, possibly a protective behavior.

“…14 Decreased deep neck muscle stiffness may compromise the control of spinal movement. 59 Mechanically less precise muscle activation in people with chronic neck pain 49 and other chronic pain conditions 15,55 has been reported. In the current study, the reduced correlation with BMI, the large stiffness ranges, and higher stiffness during some tasks (overshooting) may be interpreted in line with a reduced mechanical precision of muscle use.…”

“…Measurements of the onset of muscle motion require higher temporal acuity than that provided by conventional B-mode ultrasound. M(otion)-mode ultrasound enables a temporal resolution of 1–5 ms 25 and permits the distinction of motion in superficial and deep muscle regions 7 26 27 . M-mode delineates the instantaneous positions of sound-reflecting tissue interfaces from a single ultrasound-beam which consecutively form a trace of displacement over time ( Fig.…”

“…Deficits in these stabilising muscles exist in GTPS (Allison et al , 2016a), including GMin and GMed (Woodley, Nicholson, 2008), however the detailed activation of these muscles is unknown. Using ultrasound, GMin has been shown to activate earlier in subjects with chronic hip pain during a step down function task (Dieterich et al , 2016), however there is no way of investigating amplitude of activation using this method. In the GTPS population, there is a lack of research into gluteal muscle activation during gait, despite walking being a common aggravator of lateral hip pain.…”
