“…The BEA has been successfully applied to study K‐shell and L‐shell ionization processes in ion–atom collisions . Recently, we have shown that the BEA can give good estimates for M‐shell ionization cross sections of heavy elements by charged‐particle impact . It is essential to introduce the momentum distribution of the target electron, which can be obtained with the quantum mechanics, and the calculated BEA ionization cross section is sensitive to the choice of electron momentum distributions in the target atom.…”

“…In the case of outer‐shell electrons, the wave functions in the hydrogenic model may have different shape from those in realistic atomic models, such as the Hartree–Fock method. In the previous works, we have studied the electronic relativistic effect and the wave‐function effect on the M‐shell ionization cross sections by the use of the BEA. In comparison with other theoretical models, it is another great advantage of the BEA that both effects can be taken into account simply by changing the momentum distribution of target electrons.…”

“…Above the crossing point, the cross sections from the DHFS VDs are higher than the ones from the hydrogenic VDs. This behavior is in agreement with previous publications which covered the outer shells in di erent elements (Mukoyama, 2015(Mukoyama, , 2017(Mukoyama, , 2018.…”

“…Similar results have been obtained by Mukoyama (2015Mukoyama ( , 2017Mukoyama ( , 2018, who calculated the ionization cross sections in the BEA using VDs from hydrogenic, non-relativistic Roothaan-Hartree-Fock, and Dirac-Hartree-Slater wave functions, speci cally for for the M 5 subshell of gold (Mukoyama, 2015), the M 5 subshell of bismuth (Mukoyama, 2017), and the N 1 to N 7 subshells of bismuth (Mukoyama, 2018). Therefore, the present results agree with the e ect observed by Mukoyama and show that it remains valid for inner shells and when all shells are summed.…”
