MAAP: Malarial adhesins and adhesin‐like proteins predictor

Abstract: Malaria caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium is a dreaded disease, second only to tuberculosis. The emergence of parasites resistant to commonly used drugs and the lack of availability of vaccines aggravates the problem. One of the preventive approaches targets adhesion of parasites to host cells and tissues. Adhesion of parasites is mediated by proteins called adhesins. Abrogation of adhesion by either immunizing the host with adhesins or inhibiting the interaction using structural … Show more

“…Potential vaccine candidate characterization of 25 ORFs were carried out using various computational tools, such as Vaxijen [21,22], MAPP [23], SPAAN [24], TargetP [25], SignalP [26], TMHMM [27], and Algpred [28] algorithms. The similarity to human and mouse reference proteins and other related Plasmodium species were searched through the BLAST-P (National Center for Biotechnology Information) Web server [29] and OrthoMCL database [30].…”

“…All of the currently available information has been integrated into an accessible data base, PlasmoDB (Aurrecoechea et al 2009), which provides substantial information for the selection of antigens with vaccine potential. Among them, several novel P. vivax theoretical adhesins and adhesion-like molecules have been recently identified (Ansari et al 2008), which would expand the list of potential P. vivax vaccine candidates.…”

“…SURFIN 4.2 localizes to Maurer’s clefts and has been reported to be trafficked to the surface of the iRBC together with RIFIN and PfEMP1 [14]. Thus, SURFIN/PvSTP proteins are potential immune targets and malaria vaccine candidates [16, 17]. For another member SURFIN 4.1 , the N-terminal 50 amino acids, transmembrane domain, and adjacent intracellular region contain sufficient information for recruiting a recombinant protein into the classical ER/Golgi secretory pathway, and for efficient translocation across the PVM to the Maurer’s clefts [18].…”
