Mach 10 Stage Separation Analysis for the X43-A

Abstract: This paper describes the pre-flight stage separation analysis that was conducted in support of the final flight of the X-43A. In that flight, which occurred less than eight months after the successful Mach 7 flight, the X-43A Research Vehicle attained a peak speed of Mach 9.6. Details are provided on how the lessons learned from the Mach 7 flight affected separ ation modeling and how adjustments were made to account for the increased flight Mach number. Also, the procedure for defining the feedback loop closur… Show more

“…Up to now, large amount of work has been done by many researchers on the refractory carbide coatings. Efficient protection ability of HfC/SiC coating has been proved for C/C composites in the successful supersonic flights, and HfC/SiC coating was applied as vertical tail and head cone on X-43A hypersonic aircraft [6,7]. Alternating multilayer HfC/SiC coating was prepared through chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method by ULTRAMET Corp. [8].…”

“…Following stage separation from the rocket booster (boost and stage separation discussed in references [23][24][25][26][27], the X-43A F2 research vehicle stabilized to 2.5° AOA, and the engine cowl was opened. After 5 seconds of tare force measurements, the engine was ignited with a pyrophoric silane-hydrogen fuel mixture (left side of fig.…”
