“…The input of high loads of nutrients into coastal waters is mainly a consequence of anthropogenic activities such as fertilization, wastewater discharges and fossil fuel combustion, and constitutes a global threat to marine life (Vitousek 1997, McGlathery 2001, Kemp et al 2005, Howarth 2008). The high nutrient levels may stimulate the development of opportunistic fast-growing macroalgae species (Valiela et al 1997, Bricker et al 2003, Lapointe et al 2005, Piñón-Gimate et al 2012, Ye et al 2011, which may outcompete seagrasses and cause a shift from clear-water, oligotrophic seagrass-dominated systems to turbid, eutrophic seaweed-dominated systems (Burkholder et al 2007).
