Macrocell corrosion mechanisms of prestressing strands in various concretes

Abstract: This paper investigates the mechanisms of corrosion of seven-wire strands and the reasons for failures in detecting corrosion at early stages. As per ASTM G109 and ACI 222 R-01, a 1-year study on chloride-induced corrosion of seven-wire prestressing strands embedded in various concretes was conducted. The type of corrosion current circuits in the prismatic specimens with one top and two bottom strands was investigated. Unlike solid rebars, the concrete resistivity had a limited role on the type of corrosion ci… Show more

“…The test procedures adopting macrocell corrosion measurements do not adequately detect the corrosion initiation in highly resistive concrete systems (such as those with LC3 and with SCMs and low w/b ratios). In such systems, corrosion initiates with macrocells or microcells forming on the same steel rebar, which is not detected in typical macrocell test methods like ASTM G109 (Rengaraju et al, 2018). Also, linear polarization resistance techniques have limitations in detecting corrosion in highly resistive concrete systems (Rengaraju et al, 2019).…”

“…Nowadays there are new techniques and enhanced concrete coming up in construction industry which strongly opposes the entry of the deleterious materials and hence the process of damage may be prolonged. Various cementitious materials like ordinary Portland cement, Portland pozzolana cement, limestone calcined clay cement and Portland slag cement, supplementary cementitious materials, admixtures and corrosion inhibitors are available which makes the concrete more resistive towards the foreign materials (Dhanya et al,2018, Dhandapani et al, 2018, and Rengaraju et al,2018.…”
