IntroductionUrbanization is one of the main causes for environmental problems due to the introduction of pollutants into water bodies. Lahi is crossing fintoselam. This river has long been used for a variety of purposes including source of public water supply, small scale irrigation, bathing, washing, animal watering, sand and stone dredging and recreation.Objective: To assess the influence of Finoteselam town on ecological status of Lahi river Methods: The assessment were assessed using physicochemical parameters, physical habitat assessment, biotic indices /metrics , human activity by observation as well as macroinvertabretes samples from eleven sampling sites coded S1to S11 along the river using the standard procedures. The assessments were involved in-situ measurements and collection of water samples in April 2019 then, analyzed the water samples in laboratory. Results:The biological analysis reveals a notable reduction of the diversity macroinvertabrates in the downstream direction where the minimum was at midstream sites .Upstream has significantly better macroinvertabrates assemblage than midstream(p-value<0.05).Physical habitat evaluation scores varied from 43 at S8 to173 at S1 and relatively lower score were recorded at midstream sites. Low % of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera with high family biotic index and high % of Diptera with low biological monitoring working party also indicated water ecology deteriorated mainly at midstream sites. Multivariate analysis of classical analysis, canonical correspondence analysis and none metric multidimensional scaling also indicated ecological deterioration at midstream sites mainly at S5 , S6,S7 and S8. Conclusion:Midstream was relatively more polluted than upstream due to influence of pollutant from Finoteselam town. The ecological status of upstream segments of the river is very good with slight organic pollutions, and at midstream is poor and significant degree of organic pollutions; whereas the status of the downstream is fair with fairly substantial water pollution showing moderate ecological disturbance. In general, midstream the sampling stations show the deterioration in water ecology and thus necessitated a need for mitigation measure to save the Lahi.

Inappropriate spacing is one of the major problems in tomato production at the study area. A field experiment was conducted to determine inter- and intrarow plant spacing for yield and yield components of tomato at Shewarobit, central rift valley of Ethiopia, under irrigation condition. The treatment comprises of three intrarow spacing (20, 30, and 40 cm) and four interrow spacing (60, 80, 100, and 120 cm) replicated three times and arranged in randomized complete block design using tomato variety Weyno. Data collected on fruit yield and yield components were analysed using SAS. The main effect of interrow spacing significantly affected marketable fruit, unmarketable fruit, marketable fruit number, unmarketable fruit number, and fruit diameter. The 20 cm interrow spacing showed a marked increase in marketable fruit yield by 35.96% as compared to 30 cm spacing used by farmers. Planting tomato in closer interrow spacing (60 cm) resulted in 50% yield increment than the widest (120 cm) space between rows. Interaction effects of both inter- and intrarow spacing significantly (p < 0.05) affected plant height and fruit length. An intrarow and interrow spacing of 20 ∗ 100 cm and 20 ∗ 120 cm resulted in tallest plants and widest fruits, respectively. Therefore, farmers can use 20 cm intrarow spacing and 60 cm interrow spacing for planting of tomato seedling of Weyno variety.

Chemical pollution, i.e. the release of anthropogenic chemical substances into the environment, is a driver of biodiversity loss. Although this issue has been widely investigated in high-income countries of temperate regions, there is a lack of data for tropical areas of middle- or low-income countries, such as those in Eastern Africa. Some of the world’s richest biomes that are affected by multiple pressures, including chemical pollution, are hosted in this macro-region. However, few studies have addressed the impact of the release of anthropogenic chemical pollutants on the biodiversity, and the related potential implications for the deterioration of ecosystem goods and services in this area. A contribution in systemising the scientific literature related to this topic is, therefore, urgently needed. We reviewed studies published from 2001 to 2021, focusing on the chemical pollution impact on Eastern African wildlife. Despite an extensive literature search, we found only 43 papers according to our survey methods. We focused on wildlife inhabiting terrestrial ecosystems and inland waters. According to our search, Kenya and Uganda are the most represented countries accounting for about half of the total number of reviewed articles. Moreover, 67.4% of the studies focus on inland waters. The spread of anthropogenic chemicals into tropical areas, e.g. Eastern Africa, and their effects on living organisms deserve greater attention in research and politics. We report a weak increasing trend in publishing studies addressing this topic that might bode well. The combined effort of science and governments is crucial in improving the management of chemical pollutants in the environment for achieving the goals of biodiversity conservation.
