Macromarketing and the Systems Imperative

Abstract: Macromarketing is definitionally concerned with systems — marketing, markets and society — and their interactions. This paper lays out a case for systems research in macromarketing, the use of methods designed to study systems. In doing so, it highlights the limitations of much micromarketing research. Macromarketing and the Journal of Macromarketing is the home of systems research in marketing. Macromarketing scholars need to increase our use of systems research methodologies. We also need to connect macromar… Show more

“…As pointed out by Wilson [86] (p. 286), "evolutionary theory distinctively identifies the small group as a fundamental unit of human social organization, required for both individual well-being and effective action on a larger scale". The dynamics of collective choice in a system are not simply the product of individual aggregation or linear causality but dependent on the continuing interaction of multilevel stakeholder groups based on circular causality [87].…”

“…Thirdly, drawing on the theoretical apparatus of marketing systems research (Layton 2007;Sredl, Shultz, and Brečic 2017;Wooliscroft 2021), we demonstrate the importance of adopting a systems perspective in understanding the impact of climate change on livelihood systems. Livelihoods are complex, adaptive systems composed of a vast array of interlocking structures and processes (Mittelstaedt et al 2014).…”

“…In this research, we have viewed consumption adequacy as the ability of a community to meet its basic consumption needs-in other words, its subsistence needs (Martin and Hill 2012). We have employed a livelihood systems perspective, which is consonant with the systems perspective adopted in macromarketing literature (Wooliscroft 2021). Systems research requires us to clearly define the boundaries and scale of the system under investigation.…”

“…This empowers social marketers, macromarketers and other stakeholders with a methodological approach applicable in planning and executing multi-level systemic behavior change interventions that capture, in a better way, a system's complexity. This methodological approach puts bigger emphasis on what is missing or insufficiently developed in social marketing and macromarketingthe analysis of circular causality of complex social systems and participation of system-wide stakeholders in understanding system complexity (Carvalho and Mazzon 2020;Wooliscroft 2021).…”
