Macrophage Function in Senescence

Abstract: Although the parenteral injection of dextran sulfate 500 (DS 500; 50 mg/kg body weight) into 22-month-old NMRI mice resulted in a complete loss of resistance when administered 1 day before the sublethal (4.5 × 103) infection with Listeria monocytogenes, the consequences in aged animals were less dramatic than in young adult (2- to 3-month-old) controls. This was documented by prolonged survival times as well as reduced numbers of Listeriae in spleen. This indicates that aged mice possess an increase… Show more

“…Some authors state that macrophage function does not decline with age ( Sondell et al . 1990 ), while others have found a diminished function ( De la Fuente 1985), or a stimulation of such phagocytic activity ( Finger et al . 1982 , De la Fuente et al .…”

“…Some studies have established that these functions do not decline with age ( Makinodan & Kay 1980, Sondell et al . 1990 ); other authors have found a diminished function at certain stages of the phagocytic process ( De la Fuente 1985), whereas still others have observed a stimulation of the capacity of the monocyte–macrophage system ( Finger et al . 1982 , Ortega et al .…”

“…Due to fear of reactions following vaccination, pertussis immunization was not recommended in Germany from 1974 to 1991 [2,8].As a consequence, the low acceptance of the vaccination by pediatricians and parents led to a marked increase in the incidence of pertussis to about 100-180 cases/100,000 persons/year [2,[9][10][11].…”

“…It is known that aging is accompanied by a decline in immune response [4], although there are controversial findings in several immune functions. Some authors [5] studying the immune system in aging showed no change of macrophage function due to aging; the changes in the functional capacity of inflammatory cells are ranging from decreased to increased [3,6,7].…”
