Macular hole closure following spontaneous release of vitreomacular traction

Abstract: We describe the temporal changes observed with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in the left eye of a 65-year-old man who developed a stage 1 macular hole secondary to vitreomacular traction (VMT). After 1 month, VMT had resolved spontaneously with a complete posterior vitreous detachment. Following VMT resolution, macular hole demonstrated progressive improvement and outer retinal disruption recovered spontaneously. This report highlights the importance of observation before any interventi… Show more

“…Spontaneous closure of macular holes, mostly in advanced stages is uncommon; most of them reported as single cases or very small case series [6,13,14,17]. Ozgonul and Berlin reported a case spontaneous closure of stage 1 IMH and completely resolved pseudocyst at month 3 [18].…”

“…In some instances of secondary epiretinal membranes, the epiretinal membrane (ERM) spontaneously releases. The therapy, it has been claimed, may promote this occurrence [ 137 , 138 , 139 ]. The release of the ERM (epiretinal membrane) results in a reduction or elimination of the macula’s tractional pressures, thus allowing the macular hole to close.…”
