“…Both animal and human studies indicate a statistical relationship between a reduced dietary intake of magnesium and cardiovascular disease [1–6]. It is known that the responsiveness of vascular smooth muscle to contractile stimuli in vitro is increased as extracellular ionized Mg 2+ ([Mg 2+ ] o ) is lowered.…”

“…1 The importance of magnesium has further been emphasized by autopsy studies demonstrating more coronary atherosclerosis and evidence of myocardial infarction in men from soft water areas 2 as well as low magnesium concentrations in cardiac tissue in patients who died from sudden cardiac death. 3 Also supporting the concept is the fact that experimentally induced magnesium deficiency changes the blood lipid composition in a more atherogenic direction.…”

“…This may precipitate an acute coronary event in a susceptible heart that is already damaged by long term alcohol use. Other theories suggest that magnesium deficiency and autonomic neuropathy (observed to occur with chronic alcoholism) derail the regulation of coronary vessels at a time of adrenergic crises which can precipitate an obstruction to flow [6,7]. …”
