Magnetic and electric properties in the distorted tetrahedral spin chain system Cu3Mo2O9

Abstract: We study the multiferroic properties in the distorted tetrahedral quasi-one dimensional spin system Cu3Mo2O9, in which the effects of the low dimensionality and the magnetic frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We clarify that the antiferromagnetic order is formed together with ferroelectric properties at TN = 7.9 K under zero magnetic field and obtain the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram by measuring dielectric constant and spontaneous electric polarization. It is found that the antiferro… Show more

“…3(a) that the phase boundaries just below 20 T obtained from the magnetic-field dependences of the magnetization and the electric polarization in this work and ref. [9] connect to the ones around 8 K obtained from the temperature dependence of the specific heat [14] and the dielectric constant [7,16]. And consequently, we settle the regions of multiferroic phases.…”

“…At 0 T, P c has a finite value. This reflects the spontaneous electric polarization along the c axis [16]. The P c increases with increasing magnetic field, saturates around 15 T, and shows a rapid drop around 20 T. The magnetic-field hysteresis effects appear in both of P c and M a , as shown in Figs.…”

“…Among these three tetrahedral quasi-one dimensional spin systems, the only widely spread one contains corner-sharing tetrahedra chains, for instance, in Cu3Mo2O9 [53,54] and in pyrochlore lattices 30 . We did not manage to find in the literature any data on experimental studies of magnetic compounds, in which spin tetrahedra would be linked into chains via edges.…”

“…Very recently, the multiferroic properties have been reported in Cu 3 Mo 2 O 9 [4,5]. It possesses two distorted tetrahedral quantum spin chains, which are made from S = 1/2 Cu 2+ spins at three different Cu sites, namely Cu1-Cu3, in the orthorhombic unit cell [6], as shown in Fig.…”
