Magnetic field dependence of electrical resistivity and thermopower in Ni50Mn37Sn13 ribbons

Abstract: We report magnetization, magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetothermopower (MTEP) of melt spun Ni 50 Mn 37 Sn 13 ribbons which exhibit an austentite to martensite phase transition at a temperature (T M ) ≈ 294 K. Upon cooling from 400 K, dcresistivity and thermopower show abrupt changes at T M , indicating a change in the electronic density of states. The thermopower is negative from 400 K down to 10 K. Application of a magnetic field of µ 0 H = 5 T decreases T M by 5 K and induces large negative MR (-23%) but pos… Show more

“…In contrast, the Ni-Mn-X compounds undergo several magnetic and magneto-structural transition connected with pronounced changes of physical properties [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Importantly, some of these interesting phenomena are not fully understood yet and their explanation can potentially result in a deeper exploitation of the multifunctional properties of these materials.…”

“…The size difference affects the bandwidth, with Pr-based manganites being referred to as narrow bandwidth manganites. Appearance of the charged ordered state is influenced by Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ratio as well as the bandwidth [31], therefore Pr based manganites enter CO state more easily. The low temperature increase in magnetization is associated with phase separation (PS), i.e., existence of FM clusters, forming among AFM matrix [11].…”
