Magnetic Field Proximity Detection and Alert Technology for Safe Heavy Construction Equipment Operation

Abstract: Approximately 17% of the 721 fatalities in the US in 2011 resulted from workers colliding with objects or equipment in the work environment. Construction site conditions often create hazardous proximity situations by requiring workers-on-foot and heavy equipment to be in close proximity. Current safety management, incl. industry safety best practices, to protect construction workers-on-foot have proven inadequate. This article evaluates the reliability and effectiveness of magnetic field sensing and actuation … Show more

“…Further information might be useful, such as, is the worker located in a blind spot? Combining the approach with operator head pose tracking [28] and real-time pro-active alert technology [10,[29][30][31][32] are probably extensions and guide next steps in research.…”

“…Several of these technologies have been extensively discussed or experimentally tested by various research groups investigating construction vehicle-worker interactions. A relative large body of research work has been produced to enlarge the industry's knowledge in this domain [5,8,11,15,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][28][29][30].…”
