Magnetic Field Simulations and Measurements on Mini-ICAL

Abstract: The proposed ICAL detector is designed to detect muons generated from interaction of ν µ and anti-ν µ with Iron. It is designed with a maximum magnetic field of about 1.5 Tesla (with 90% of its volume having > 1 Tesla magnetic field). The magnetic field is intended for charge identification and momentum reconstruction of the muons. The mini-ICAL is a fully functional 85-ton prototype detector. One of the main challenges for the mini-ICAL detector is to produce the required B-field and to measure it as accurate… Show more

“…Hence the 5-layer model (1,3,6,9,11) shows a larger magnetic field in layer-6 than the 5 layer model (2,4,6,8,10) where the layers adjoining the central one are closer. Similarly, the 3-layer model (1,6,11) with very distant neighbours has a larger magnetic field in layer 6 than the 3-layer model (5,6,7) with closely adjacent layers. Clearly the magnetic field in a layer depends on the number of adjoining layers as well as their relative distances from that layer.…”

“…As 3 or 5 layers are added, the field decreases from the 1-layer model and is intermediate between the 1-layer and 11-layer models. However, the relative placement of the layers also matters: the field in the central module is always smaller either if there are more layers (2,4,6,8,10) or if the adjacent layers are closer to the central layer (5,6,7). Hence the 5-layer model (1,3,6,9,11) shows a larger magnetic field in layer-6 than the 5 layer model (2,4,6,8,10) where the layers adjoining the central one are closer.…”

“…Hence, separately, a detailed simulations study of the magnetic field in mini-ICAL [11] as a function of the coil current and the gap widths, has been made using the MAGNET software [12]. A sample result is shown in figure 4.…”
