Magnetic fields in the galactic Universe, as observed in supershells, galaxies, intergalactic and cosmic realms

Abstract: Recent measurem ents of the properties of cosmic rays above 1017 e V are sum m arized and implications on our contemporary understanding o f their origin are discussed. Cosmic rays with energies exceeding 1020 e V have been measured, they are the highest-energy particles in the Uni verse. Particles at, highest energies are expected to be only marginally deflected by ' m agnetic fields and they should point towards their sources on the sky. Recent results o f the Pierre A uger Observatory have opened a new wind… Show more

“…(34). The dielectric tensor is also affected by the pseudomagnetic field B 0,5 and the chiral chemical potential µ 5 . By taking into account that b 0 = −µ 5 /e in equilibrium, we find that ε ml is symmetric with respect to the replacement (B 0,5 , µ 5 ) → (B 0 , µ).…”

“…(43), a gapless mode can be naturally realized in parity-odd Weyl materials under strain. The corresponding materials are characterized by a strain-induced background pseudomagnetic field B 0,5 and a nonzero chiral chemical potential µ 5 . In equilibrium, the latter is determined by the energy separation between the Weyl nodes, i.e., µ 5 = −eb 0 .…”

“…Stars enter and leave the arms in their quasicircular dynamical orbits around the Galactic center (adapted from Roberts 1975). Outside the arms, the Galactic orbits for gas in the gravitational potential were likened to a "4-segment spiral" (Vallée 2011; his Figure 37).…”

“…The Milky Way and other spiral galaxies have coherent magnetic fields of μG-order magnitude, while galaxy clusters and remote protogalactic clouds also carry fields of similar strength (Han & Wielebinski 2002, Vallée 2011. Moreover, recently, there have been independent reports of relatively strong magnetic fields (around 10 −15 G) in intergalactic voids (Neronov 2010, Tavecchio et al 2010, Ando & Kusenko 2010.…”
