Magnetic glutamine‐grafted polymer for the sorption of U(VI), Nd(III) and Dy(III)

Abstract: BACKGROUND The nuclear power industry and other high‐tech industries require increasing quantities of uranium and rare‐earth elements (REEs). There is a need for materials that can competitively recover these metals from ore leachates (such as produced in the leaching of Egyptian ores). RESULTS A sorbent based on the chemical grafting of glutamine moieties on a magnetic polyacrylonitrile support was synthesized: polyacrylonitrile, crosslinked with 10% divinyl benzene in the presence of magnetite, was chemicall… Show more

“…The broad band at 3402.0 cm −1 is corresponded to O–H and NH stretching vibrations, which were overlapped [ 44 , 45 ]; while the peak at 2931.0 cm −1 was assigned to CH aliphatic stretching of hydrocarbon [ 46 , 47 ]. The two peaks at 1635.0 cm −1 and 1561.0 cm −1 were related to C=O stretching overlapped with amine-bending vibration [ 46 , 47 ]. The peaks at 2370.0 cm −1 and 2341.0 cm −1 were related to carbon dioxide peaks, adsorbed onto the protein surface [ 48 ].…”

“…(e) Hydrazinyl amine derivative of CE-MG-CH (HA-MG-CH) Hydrazine hydrate (10.9 g) was dissolved in 30 mL of absolute ethanol before adding CN-MG-CH material; the mixture was maintained under constant stirring for 6 h at 75 ± 2 °C. The sorbent was obtained after decantation and magnetic separation, ethanol washing, Milli-Q water washing and freeze-drying for 24 h (-54 °C, 0.1 mPa) [32,33], the scheme for sorbent synthesis is shown in Figure 1.…”

“…The functionalization of MPAN consisted of a series of reactions with: (a) hydrazine hydrate to yield polyhydrazinyl amine (MPHA), (b) carbon disulfide to produce thion derivative (MTDT), (c) ethyl chloroacetate to synthesize acetate derivative (MTDE), (d) hydrazine hydrate to produce hydrazide derivative (MTHA), and (e) sodium nitrite (under specifically experimental conditions) to obtain MTZA (poly 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-(3H)-thionylacetylazide) resin. The resin was then reacted with glutamine methyl ester to produce magnetic poly(methylglutamine) resin (MGLU) (Hamza and Abdel-Rahman, 2015;Hamza et al, 2018). FTIR analysis and chemical characterization have already been reported (Hamza et al, 2018).…”

FTIR analysis and chemical characterization have already been reported (Hamza et al, 2018). The particles were sieved and the fraction 100-200 Mesh (0.074-0.149 mm) was used for the sorption experiments.…”
