Jordan has a complex history that has left tangible traces in numerous archaeological sites scattered throughout the country. This unique heritage of inestimable cultural value must be documented, thoroughly researched, and protected in order to prevent its destruction and loss. In this context, knowledge and documentation can be achieved through the application of non-destructive geophysical and geomatic methods. This work represents a synthesis of the results of twenty years of projects carried out at the archaeological sites of Basta, Petra, Um-Hamat (Karak), Umm ar-Rasas, Wu’Ayra, Madaba, and Shawbak. This study enables the exploration of new buried structures in the ground and the documentation of the state of preservation of the structures. It provides an up-to-date overview of Jordan’s rich archaeological heritage and supports restoration projects.

ABSTRACTWe present a 3-D cross-gradient joint inversion algorithm for seismic refraction and DC resistivity data. The structural similarity between seismic slowness and resistivity models is enforced by a cross-gradient term in the objective function that also includes misfit and regularization terms. A limited memory quasi-Newton approach is used to perform the optimization of the objective function. To validate the proposed methodology and its implementation, tests were performed on a typical archaeological geophysical synthetic model. The results show that the inversion model and physical parameters estimated by our joint inversion method are more consistent with the true model than those from single inversion algorithm. Moreover, our approach appears to be more robust in conditions of noise. Finally, the 3-D cross-gradient joint inversion algorithm was applied to the field data from Lin_an ancient city site in Hangzhou of China. The 3-D cross-gradient joint inversion models are consistent with the archaeological excavation results of the ancient city wall remains. However, by single inversion, seismic slowness model does not show the anomaly of city wall remains and resistivity model does not fit well with the archaeological excavation results. Through these comparisons, we conclude that the proposed algorithm can be used to jointly invert 3-D seismic refraction and DC resistivity data to reduce the uncertainty brought by single inversion scheme.

Geophysical techniques are used to detect mounds and burial chambers, but detecting the shape and layout of large mausoleums containing main tombs and ancillary facilities is a developing field. The shape and layout of mausoleums are closely related to cultural practices. In this study, integrated geophysical technologies were used to survey a large-scale mausoleum in Hangzhou, China. The layout of the main tomb was deduced from magnetic gradient measurements, and the depth and scale were inferred from electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). The location and burial depth of ancillary facilities, including the mausoleum path, were characterized using the depth (time) slice of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) three-dimensional (3D) attribute analysis. An integrated interpretation of geophysical results combined with archaeological documents provides the plan and section layouts of the mausoleum. Based on integrated analyses and archaeological documents, the age of the mausoleum was inferred (middle to late Southern Song Dynasty). Subsequent test excavations partly confirmed the results and showed that the combination of geophysical technologies and archaeological documents are effective and valuable for detecting large-scale mausoleums.
