Magnetic Mg-Fe/LDH Intercalated Activated Carbon Composites for Nitrate and Phosphate Removal from Wastewater: Insight into Behavior and Mechanisms

Abstract: This experimental work focused on the synthesis, characterization, and testing of a unique, magnetically separable, and eco-friendly adsorbent composite material for the advanced treatment and efficient removal of nitrate and phosphate pollutants from wastewater. The MgAl-augmented double-layered hydroxide (Mg-Fe/LDH) intercalated with sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC-MgFe) composites were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, BET, VSM, SEM, and TEM techniques, revealing homogeneous and efficient dispersion of MgFe/… Show more

“…It is found that there are no significant variations in the adsorption capacities of MO with the participation of PO 4 3− , NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , Cl − , or CO 3 2− (Figure S6, Supporting Information ), illustrating that the presence of these five anions have no interfering effect for the adsorption of MO by S‐doped MMC‐2, which is in good agreement with a previous study. [ 38 ]…”

“…To further elucidate the phenol uptake mechanism under equilibrium conditions and determine the maximum uptake capacity of phenol onto the SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH, non-linear forms of the five (5) different popular equilibrium models were employed in this study [ 35 , 58 ]. The fittings of these isotherm models are depicted in Figure 6 , while their corresponding models’ parameters obtained are presented in Table 5 .…”

“…A coprecipitation process as reported by Alagha et al [ 35 ] was employed for the hybridization of the MgAlFe with the NaOH-SBAC to produce the SBAC-MgAlFe-LDH composite. Firstly, for each molar ratio of 0.05:0.05:0.1 of the precursor salts, which were Mg:Al:Fe salts (i.e., 1.3:1.9:4.04 g), 250 mg of the SBAC was homogeneously dispersed in 100 mL of the ionized water–salts mixture via ultrasonication for half an hour.…”

“…Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), known as hydrotalcites, have a potential role in the treatment of a wide range of anionic, organic and inorganic chemicals [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. LDHs are inorganic substances composed of stacked layers of positively charged metal cations with charge-balancing anions situated in the interlayer sites [ 18 ].…”
