“…Silicides constitute an extensive family of interesting compounds. For instance, equiatomic ternary compounds, such as HoCoSi, 190 ErFeSi 163 or ErRuSi 191 are well-known ferromagnets with a remarkable MCE and appropriate Curie temperatures (see the curves of ErFeSi in Figure 4D). The main group of silicides are those with the general formula RM 2 Si 2 and ThCr 2 Si 2 -type crystal structure, with M = Mn, Cr, Ru, Fe, etc.…”

“…The rectangular lattice stacks along the c-axis. The isostructural Tb 2 Co 2 Al has been reported to be a ferromagnet [4] below 111 K. A neutron diffraction study [4] has clarified that Tb and Co sublattices form a c-axis ferrimagnetic ordering. The magnetic moment of Tb at 2 K is 8.86 µ B , which dominates over that of Co with 0.26 µ B .…”

“…Several ferromagnetic compounds of R 2 Co 2 Al and R 2 Co 2 Ga (R = heavy rare earth) with an orthorhombic W 2 CoB 2 (Mo 2 NiB 2 ) -type structure [1] are attractive as magnetic refrigeration materials [2][3][4][5]. Recently, we studied the orthorhombic W 3 CoB 3 -type Tb 3 Co 3 Ga that is located near Tb 2 Co 2 Ga in the ternary phase diagram [6].…”

“…The series of RE 2 Co 2 Al and RE 2 Co 2 Ga compounds (RE = rare earth metal) with an orthorhombic W 2 CoB 2 (Mo 2 NiB 2 )-type structure, 1,2 belonging to the second largest group among the R 2 T 2 M compounds, is known to exhibit a wide variety of physical properties, such as multiple magnetic transitions, non-saturation of magnetization, and the magnetocaloric effect, and, in addition, they are of particular interest as potential hydrogen storage materials. [3][4][5][6][7][8] In many cases, the existence of compounds with a certain structure type is restricted by the valence electron concentration (VEC), in particular VEC per unit cell ranges from 26 to 30 for the W 2 CoB 2 -type compounds. 3,9 However, this criterion cannot convincingly explain the absence of the RE 2 Co 2 Al (RE = La, Ce) compounds in the respective ternary systems.…”
