Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings of Biliary Adenofibroma

Abstract: Biliary adenofibroma is a rare tumor with a bile duct origin characterized by a complex tubulocystic non-mucin secreting biliary epithelium with abundant fibrous stroma. The MRI features of biliary adenofibroma are not well established. The authors encountered two patients with biliary adenofibroma and reviewed the literature focusing on the MRI findings. A well-circumscribed multicystic tumor with septal enhancement and no intrahepatic bile duct communication may be the characteristic MRI findings of biliary … Show more

“…To our knowledge, this is the first detailed comprehensive review of the imaging characteristics of BAF in the published literature. Lee et al [ 17 ] simply summarized the MRI findings of 8 patients with BAF, but not the radiologic features of other imaging modalities or the enhancement patterns of lesions.…”

“…Characteristic MRI-findings of biliary adenofibroma have previously been suggested to be a well-circumscribed multicystic tumor with septal enhancement and no intrahepatic bile duct communication, based on a report of two cases and a review of MRI features reported in the literature [8]. Differential diagnoses for biliary adenofibroma include cystic neoplasms such as intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct (IPNB) and mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver (MCN) [8].…”

“…Liver function indices were within normal limits. One patient had a history of hepatitis B[ 21 ], but the hepatitis status was not mentioned in the remaining patients. The location of the lesion was the left lobe in 11 patients and the right lobe in 13 patients (the specific location of the liver lesion was not mentioned in the remaining patient).…”

“…There was no significant change in the signal of the lesion in the in-phase and out-phase sequence. In previous cases, the bile duct epithelial components of the lesions had no secretory function, but some lesions showed a tendency to enlarge and develop cystic components during the follow-up period[ 21 ]. The diameter of the solid lesions in three cases[ 8 , 10 , 20 ] and the solid lesions in the present case were smaller (4.08 ± 1.16 cm) than the mean diameter of the cystic and solid lesions (7.00 ± 3.03 cm).…”
