Magnetic resonance imaging is an accurate and reliable method to evaluate non‐cystic fibrosis paediatric lung disease

Abstract: Chest MRI was equivalent to HRCT to determine the extent of lung disease in children with non-CF lung disease. The findings support the use of chest MRI as an alternative to HRCT in diagnostic pathways for paediatric chronic lung disorders.

“…Similar to CF, chest CT scanning is more accurate to assess early PCD lung disease compared with spirometric indices (38). Chest high field 3T magnetic resonance imaging appears to be as effective as high-resolution chest CT in assessing the extent and severity of lung abnormalities in PCD, making this radiation-free imaging technique an intriguing option for longitudinal assessment and research studies (43).…”

“…Chest CT is more sensitive for detecting early lung disease in PCD, compared to lung function testing by spirometry (60). Magnetic resonance imaging of the chest may be as effective as chest CT in defining the extent and severity of lung disease in PCD, which is an intriguing option for longitudinal evaluation and research (65). …”
