MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF THE BRAIN AND COELOMIC CAVITY OF THE DOMESTIC PIGEON (Columba livia domestica)

Abstract: The technical feasibility of performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in domestic pigeons was investigated. Imaging was performed with a 1.5 Tesla magnet using a human knee surface coil. The head and coelomic cavity of isoflurane-anesthetized birds were imaged in the dorsal, sagittal, and transverse planes to produce T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. The birds were then euthanatized, formalin perfused, frozen, and sectioned in the corresponding anatomic planes. The anatomy … Show more

“…The most rostral aspect of the telencephalon corresponds to the olfactory bulbs. In the present study, the olfactory bulbs were consistently T2‐weighted hyperintense to the remaining brain parenchyma; this feature was not reported in previous studies describing the MRI anatomy of the avian brain . The cause of different signal behavior is unknown; one possible explanation is the laminar organization of the olfactory bulb, in contrast to the nuclear organization of the remaining parts of the telencephalon …”

“…The MRI features of the brain and celomic cavity of the domestic pigeon, as well as MRI features of the brain of canaries and European starling have been described . Magnetic resonance imaging has been proven to be useful to assess chronic sinonasal diseases in psittacine birds, diagnose hydrocephalus in African grey parrots, and has been shown to be superior to radiography in evaluating spinal cord trauma in three bald eagles .…”

“…However, the zoological use of such technology in more basic anatomical research has been rather limited. The few anatomical investigations incorporating CT and MRI technology include descriptions of the internal anatomy of the feline abdomen (Samii et al 1999), and the brain and coelomic cavity of the domestic pigeon (Romagnano et al 1996). The techniques have also been used in paleaontological studies, for example the measurements of brain size in Allosaurus (Rogers 1999).…”
