Magnetic resonance imaging spectrum of medulloblastoma

Abstract: The results of our study suggest: (a) an age-dependent distribution of MB variants, with DMB and MB-EN more common in younger children; (b) a female predominance in DMB; (c) a more common off-midline location in DMB (50%) and MB-EN (33%) variants.

“…These results are consistent with data from other published reports. 2,10,19,23,31 Tumor enhancement may be associated with other tumor characteristics. Tynninen et al 33 retrospectively studied microvessel density, tumor proliferation rate, and degree of enhancement in 62 gliomas.…”

“…In practical terms, the two tumors can usually be distinguished by location and age at presentation. About one half of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors are in the supratentorial compartment whereas medulloblastoma is a posterior fossa tumor; approximately two thirds of infratentorial atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors are located in the cerebellopontine angle as opposed to medulloblastomas which, in children, occur in the fourth ventricle in approximately 80% of cases 28 . Age at presentation also differs between the two tumors.…”

“…In all variants the enhancement was in most cases intense and homogeneous. 6,9 Very infrequently, MBs involving the CPA may present with widening and deep invasion of the IAC, simulating an acoustic neuroma, or with a dural-based appearance, without bony involvement or hyperostosis, simulating a petrosal meningioma. 12,13,17 In our reported case the tumor had heterogenous hyperintensity on T2 WI and heterogenous enhancement on post contrast scan.…”

“…In rare cases they present with ill-defined margins, hypointensity signal on T2, mild or nodular enhancement. [4][5][6] Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is an uncommon site and only 39 cases have been reported to date in best of our knowledge. We report a further case of CPA MB in a 12 year old female child.…”
