Magnetic resonance imaging with computed tomography of a renal leiomyoma

Abstract: Renal leiomyoma are rare, benign tumors of the kidney. There is little information about the imaging of these tumors with modern modalities. We present a case of computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of a large renal leiomyoma.

“…At MR imaging, leiomyoma typically has homogeneously low signal intensity on T1-and T2-weighted images. However, larger tumors show mixed signal intensity on MR images that is caused by myxoid or cystic degeneration, hemorrhage, and calcifications (14,15). Larger tumors are indistinguishable from renal cell carcinoma and leiomyosarcoma with imaging studies.…”

“…On MRI, they appear homogeneously hypointense due to compact tumor cells on T1 and T2 weighted imaging sequences. 20 Plasmacytoma is a plasma cell neoplasm that may manifest as primary amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, or monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance. They can have osseous (medullary) or nonosseous (extramedullary) origins.…”
