Magnetic resonance relaxometry in quantitative imaging of brain gliomas: A literature review

Abstract: Magnetic resonance (MR) relaxometry is a quantitative imaging method that measures tissue relaxation properties. This review discusses the state of the art of clinical proton MR relaxometry for glial brain tumors. Current MR relaxometry technology also includes MR fingerprinting and synthetic MRI, which solve the inefficiencies and challenges of earlier techniques. Despite mixed results regarding its capability for brain tumor differential diagnosis, there is growing evidence that MR relaxometry can differenti… Show more

“…In addition to ischemic stroke, quantitative hyperintensity on T2-weighted imaging due to intrinsic properties of water has been used to assess other neurological diseases such as peritumoral oedema, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis ( 56 , 57 ). T2-weighted or FLAIR imaging has been used to estimate lesion age, with DWI/FLAIR mismatch being suggestive of onset within 4.5 h ( 58 ).…”

“…DWI combined with choline levels determined by MRS can also significantly improve the differential diagnosis of recurrent HGG and radiation damage, as well as the intraoperative characterization of tumor type and margin [137][138][139]. MR relaxometry, a quantitative imaging method that measures tissue relaxation properties, can help differentiate between gliomas and metastases and between different grades of glioma [140]. Relaxometry can help define the peritumoral areas with a greater probability of tumor infiltration and the hypoxic areas not identified by perfusion.…”
