“…5 The exchange interactions can be mediated by two different modes: (1) The indirect exchange that occurs between two Mn planes through the conduction electron polarization process and (2) the super exchange mediated through the Mn-Si(Ge)-Si(Ge)-Mn chain. 6 To characterize the antiferromagnetic ordering with accuracy, 57 Fe Mossbauer study was carried out and showed that the Mn sublattice probably is antiferromagnetically ordered up to 470 K and 415 K, respectively, for LaMn 2 Si 2 and LaMn 2 Ge 2 . 2 In the present work, the magnetic behavior of these compounds, when Si is gradually replaced by Ge, was investigated by measuring the magnetic hyperfine field (B hf ) at Mn sites with perturbed c À c angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy using 111 In( 111 Cd) as probe nuclei.…”

“…The layered compounds RMn 2 Ge 2 (Rϭrare earth͒, known to crystallize in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type tetragonal crystal structure, are of considerable interest [1][2][3][4] as the nature of magnetic ordering of the Mn sublattice depends sensitively on the planar Mn-Mn distance (d). Thus for R alloys in which the value of d exceeds 2.87 Å , ferromagnetism is observed and for dϽ2.87 Å antiferromagnetism prevails.…”

“…These two probe approach is very important when investigating the magnetic behavior of compounds that present different types of exchange interactions, such as inter-layer exchange interaction Mn-Mn and intra-layer interactions through indirect exchange that occurs between two Mn planes mediated by conduction electron polarization. 9,10 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Partial financial support for this research was provided by Fapesp. B.B.S., A.W.C., R.S.F., and R.N.S.…”
